Summary
The US onAir Network will be working with volunteers from Kentucky universities, colleges, and nonprofit organizations to oversee the curation and moderation of posts, aircasts (online discussions), and in person events for the Kentucky onAir Hub … related to federal, state, and local elections and government.
Our first outreach will be to University of Kentucky partly because of its proximity to the state capital. We have identified many of University of Kentucky’s civic engagement, academic, internship and research programs related to making democracy and civic responsibility a focus of higher learning on their campus … for students, faculty, staff, and local community. This post, over time, will have similar information on other collaborating organizations in the state.

About
The University of Kentucky’ onAir chapter will initially focus on training interested undergrad and graduate students on how to curate Kentucky onAir content especially submitting Top News articles, events, videos, and information and moderating forums in each post they curate.
Student curators will also work with state senate and house committee chairs to produce aircasts on issues being discussed and bills being proposed in their committees.
During election season, students with other other organizations like the League of Women Voters, will coordinate and produce aircasted debates with candidates.

Civic Engagement Programs

The University of Kentucky is the state’s flagship, land-grant institution. Its mission is to provide education and research on behalf of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the larger world around us.
But there’s another important responsibility UK has — service.
Kentucky is a diverse state with 120 counties and UK has a presence in each and every county through the agricultural extension service. Whether it’s help with farming or financial planning, UK’s extension agents are our ambassadors to the Commonwealth.
But the commitment to service extends to every facet of university life. At the Coldstream Research Park in Lexington, UK is growing start-up high-tech and health-care companies that are growing tomorrow’s economy today. Throughout the state, the College of Dentistry’s mobile dental vans are providing dental care to thousands of Kentucky’s children. UK HealthCare’s A. B. Chandler Hospital has partnerships in community hospitals throughout the state, designed to help people stay closer to home for the basic medical needs. And our researchers are conducting pioneering studies in everything from water quality and energy production to breast cancer and cardiovascular disease.
UK is a university fully engaged in the state, country and world we serve. It’s a fundamental part of our mission.

We have countless opportunities for students in all aspects of our organization. Applications are now open to join the UKSGA Executive Team by applying to be a 2021-2022 coordinator, offering leadership roles in everything from Marketing and Communications to Health and Wellness.
The UKSGA Wildcat Wardrobe is also currently accepting applications for volunteers. The Wildcat Wardrobe will open to UK’s student body on September 1st. As a volunteer, you are required to work 2-3 hours a week in the Wardrobe, assisting students looking for professional clothing and helping to run the service.
In addition, all freshman students are invited to apply for our 2021-2022 Leadership Development Program, which is designed to provide freshman with learning experiences and networking opportunities with University of Kentucky leaders.

An internship is a professional-level learning experience in a workplace. Students are able to apply learning from the classroom to real situations and test out whether a particular career choice is right for them. Internships also help students make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths. All five majors in the College of Communication and Information offer internships for credit after students have completed a certain number of hours in the major. ICT, ISC, JOU and MAS require an internship.

Political science majors explore issues of power, conflict, and justice. Students will study theories of government and the development of political systems along with the role of groups and individuals within the political process. With this understanding students will begin to explain why governments and people behave the way they do and see how changes to a governmental system will alter behavior in the future. The Department of Political Science at UK offers a wide range of courses spanning the sub-fields of American Politics, Comparative Politics, and International Relations. Specific subjects include: political processes, judicial behavior, political theory, international conflict, political behavior, comparative institutions, public administration, women in politics, constitutional law, and state and local government.

UK BLUE
If you know you want a career in law, then the UK BLUE program may be right for you. Incoming freshmen majoring in Political Science can apply to participate in this 3+3 partnership with UK Law. Students selected for this accelerated program finish their B.A. and J.D. in six years, all while participating in enrichment activities that expose them to the legal, clinical, community service, and career opportunities that a law degree makes possible. What You’ll Study
Political science majors take introductory course work in each of four areas: American politics; comparative politics; international relations; and theory/methodology. Majors then pursue advanced studies in one or more of these fields as determined by their interests and/or career goals. Political science courses are designed to provide students with a broad liberal arts education.
